RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cardiovascular effects produced by transthoracic application of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy (LIPUST). METHODS: Three-month-old male Wistar rats (± 300 g, N=16) were randomly allocated in two groups, namely SHAM (control group, faked procedures) and UST (animals treated with LIPUST). These animals, under anesthesia, were instrumented (femoral artery and vein catheterization) for hemodynamic recordings (mean blood pressure [MBP], heart rate [HR]) and blood biochemical profile (lipids, creatine kinase-myocardial band [CK-MB]). Then, LIPUST (spatial average-temporal average [ISATA] 1-MHz, power 0.1 to 1.2 W/cm2, pulsed 2:8 ms, cycle at 30%, for three minutes) was applied to animals from the UST group, externally to their thorax. SHAM animals were equally manipulated, but without application of ultrasound energy. After the hemodynamic and biochemical measurements, animals were sacrificed, and their hearts were mounted in a Langendorff apparatus for coronary reactivity evaluation. Standard histology techniques were employed to analyze the hearts. RESULTS: LIPUST application caused statistically significant reductions in MBP (92±4 vs. 106±1 mmHg) and HR (345±14 vs. 380±17 rpm) when compared with SHAM procedures. UST rats exhibited higher CK-MB levels (318±55 vs. 198±26 U/dL) and lower plasma triglycerides levels (38±7 vs. 70±10 mg/dL) than SHAM animals. Coronary reactivity was not significantly changed by LIPUST. Cardiac histopathology showed an increase in capillary permeability in treated animals when compared with SHAM animals. CONCLUSION: Noninvasive LIPUST induces significant metabolic and hemodynamic changes, including intensity-dependent bradycardia and hypotension, indicating a possible therapeutic effect for cardiac events.

INTRODUCTION: This paper proposes a reflection on the ethical relationship of the physiotherapist in the Intensive Therapy Unit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a literature review on the basis of electronic databases MEDLINE, LILACS e SciELO, the period 1998-2010. The words were: "ethics in physical therapy in the ICU" and combinations of the words "physiotherapy", "ethics/bioethics", "ICU/ICC", "humanization" and "health". RESULTS: Adding up all databases, generated by the corpus consisted of 23 bibliographic records, records of these 23, four have significant interface with the ethics of physiotherapy in the ICU. DISCUSSION: Studies show that, due to the recent role of the physiotherapist in the ICU environment associated with the fact that a very strict routine established in these centers and little discussion of the ethical dilemmas of the day-to-day ICUs, becomes urgent change in how to manage the relationship between patient and therapist, aiming to improve human relations at all levels. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: According to the literature review presented, it is of fundamental importance the involvement and participation of a physiotherapist in discussions involving ethical dilemmas in ICU, in addition, the acquisition of more knowledge about ethical issues and aspects related to the humanization of intensive care should be topics of discussion not only limited to the scope of physical therapy, but all professionals. Additionally, future studies are needed to improve the practice of physical therapy and better define and point out the main difficulties in this professional context.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (HF-TENS) in antihyperalgesia, assessed through changes of sciatic nerve activity and its effects on cardiorespiratory parameters, using formalin-induced nociception in anesthetized rats. The animals were divided into formalin (FORM) and HF-TENS groups. All rats received injections of 5% formalin (50 µl, right hind-paw). The sciatic nerve activity and cardiopulmonary parameters (mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and respiratory frequency) were measured, and then the serum levels of serotonin (5-HT) were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The formalin injection was able to increase the sciatic nerve activity, heart rate, and respiratory frequency. The treatment with HF-TENS significantly reduced the sciatic nerve activity and respiratory frequency 20 minutes after formalin injection and was able to increase serum 5-HT. Furthermore, when comparing the groups, reductions in the mean arterial pressure, heart rate, respiratory frequency, and sciatic nerve activity were shown at different times. Thus, we concluded that HF-TENS was capable of inducing analgesia, which was most likely related to increased serotonin release. Moreover, we demonstrated that TENS was able to block the adverse cardiovascular and respiratory changes induced by pain. Further neurophysiological studies are necessary to clarify the intrinsic mechanisms underlying HF-TENS-induced analgesia.

RESUMO

Triorganotins, such as tributyltin (TBT), are environmental contaminants that are commonly used as antifouling agents for boats. However, TBT is also known to alter mammalian reproductive functions. Although the female sex hormones are primarily involved in the regulation of reproductive functions, 17ß-estradiol also protects against cardiovascular diseases, in that this hormone reduces the incidence of coronary artery disease via coronary vasodilation. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of 100 ng/kg TBT administered daily by oral gavage for 15 d on coronary functions in female Wistar rats. Findings were correlated with changes in sex steroids concentrations. Tributyltin significantly increased the baseline coronary perfusion pressure and impaired vasodilation induced by 17ß-estradiol. In addition, TBT markedly decreased serum 17ß-estradiol levels accompanied by a significant rise in serum progesterone levels. Tributyltin elevated collagen deposition in the heart interstitium and number of mast cells proximate to the cardiac vessels. There was a positive correlation between the increase in coronary perfusion pressure and incidence of cardiac hypertrophy. In addition, TBT induced endothelium denudation (scanning electron microscopy) and accumulation of platelets. Moreover, TBT impaired coronary vascular reactivity to estradiol (at least in part), resulting in endothelial denudation, enhanced collagen deposition and elevated number of mast cells. Taken together, the present results demonstrate that TBT exposure may be a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disorders in rats.

RESUMO

Raloxifene is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator that has been approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Studies have revealed several effects of raloxifene on the cardiovascular system, which might contribute to the blood pressure regulatory mechanisms, particularly in the systemic arterial hypertension. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of raloxifene on the blood pressure, renal excretion of water and Na(+) and plasma nitrite/nitrate levels in 2-kidney-1-clip (2K1C) hypertensive female rats. The groups were as follows: hypertensive (2K1C), hypertensive ovariectomized (2K1C + OVX) and hypertensive ovariectomized treated with raloxifene (2K1C + OVX + R). Seven days after the surgery that produced menopause, 2K1C hypertension was produced in anaesthetized animals. Seven days after the clip application, the rats were put into metabolic cages to allow for the measurement of water ingestion and diuresis, and raloxifene was administered (2 mg/kg/day i.p., for 7 more days). We found a large reduction (p < 0.01) in mean arterial pressure (197 ± 6 to 164 ± 2 mmHg), an increase in renal excretion of sodium and water (p < 0.05) and an increase in plasma levels of nitrite/nitrate in 2K1C + OVX + R animals, when compared with the 2K1C (23.4 ± 1 versus 14 ± 0.5 nmol/mL; p < 0.01, respectively). These findings suggest that raloxifene exerted its antihypertensive effect, at least in part, by improving the renal excretion of sodium and water.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low level laser therapy and cyclooxygenase-2 (ICOX2) selective inhibitors have been widely used to modulate inflammatory response; however, their effect on wound reepithelialization are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the isolated and combined effects of low level laser therapy and ICOX2 in the reepithelization of skin incisional wounds in mice. METHODS: We induced a 1-cm wound on the back of each mouse, which were divided into four groups (N = 20): control, laser therapy, treated with celecoxib and combined therapy. The animals in the celecoxib and combined therapy groups were treated with celecoxib for 10 days before skin incision. The experimental wounds were irradiated with He-Ne low power laser (632nm, dose: 4J/cm2) in scanning for 12 seconds during three consecutive days in the laser therapy and combined therapy groups. The animals were sacrificed 3 days after surgery. Samples of the wounds were collected and stained (Masson's Trichrome) for histomorphometric analysis. RESULTS: Both the laser therapy group and the celecoxib group showed an increase in skin reepithelialization compared to the control group; however, the combined therapy group showed no differences. As for keratinization, the laser therapy and combined therapy groups showed a reduction in keratinocytes compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: The results show that the use of low level laser therapy and ICOX2 in isolation increases epithelial cells, but only low level laser therapy reduced skin keratinocytes. The combined treatment restores innate epithelialization and decreases keratinization in spite of accelerating wound contraction with improvement in the organization of the wound in the skin of mice.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate gender differences in neuronal sensory threshold (NS) for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) among young adults, and the probable effects of thermotherapy. METHODS: 30 young healthy students (15 men and 15 women) with 22±2 years old were divided by gender. TENS was applied in both right and left knees of subjects with a frequency of 20 Hz and pulse duration of 230µs. The amplitude of the electric current (mǺ) was gradually increased to record the perception threshold (ST) and tolerance threshold (TT), before/after thermotherapy. The warm R-knee was performed by infrared light (250W) ≈70cm perpendicular, and cooling L-knee with icepack, both carried out for 15 minutes. The tissue temperature was recorded by digital thermometry. The data were analyzed and differences established at p<0.05.RESULTS: The tissue temperature after heat treatments was different (p≤0.05) between genders. The basal ST for TENS was not different between genders, however, thermotherapy raised the NS in both men and women. At the baseline TT was lower (p ≤0.05) in women, however, after thermotherapy it increased (p≤0.05) in both sexes. CONCLUSION: Neuronal sensory threshold for TENS is gender- thermo-dependent in healthy young adults

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Low-intensity ultrasound therapy (LIUST) has been described as a plausible treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). AIMS: To evaluate the short-term effects of continuous 1MHz LIUST on nasal obstruction in subjects with CRS. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A cohort placebo-controlled study comprising 26 CRS adults (10 men, 16 women), sequentially allocated into two groups: control-placebo (CP, n= 12) and treated with LIUST (US, n = 14). The treatment consisted of: ISATA = continuous 1MHz, 1W.cm-2 for four minutes in the maxillary sinuses and nasal septum. The equipment was switched off in the CP group. The degree of obstruction was assessed by the total volume of secretion expelled (VSEx) after nasal instillation of 5 mL saline solution (NaCl-0.9%) followed by nasal lavage. The volume of expired air (VEA) was assessed with a Glatzel mirror. RESULTS: The data showed an increase (p < 0.01) in VSEx and VEA after ultrasound therapy, suggesting a 64% improvement of nasal obstruction compared with the CP group. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous LIUST reduced nasal obstruction and congestionç it may be used effectively in the respiratory therapy of CRS patients.

No grupo CP o equipamento permaneceu desligado.

BACKGROUND: Passive or static stretching (ALMP) is often used in rehabilitation programs and in sports; however, the morphological changes occurred are not very clear, especially after prolonged immobilization. AIMS:This study aimed to examine the muscle morphological and functional changes produced in response to three weeks of ALMP in an animal model of prolonged immobilization of hind limb (HL) in the short range. METHODS: For this purpose, 32 rats (Wistar) were used and divided in 4 groups (n = 8 each): A- control group (CONT), B - immobilized group for 21 days (IMMOB), C - remobilized group for 21 days (FREE), D - elongated group for 21 days (ELONG). The variables evaluated were body weight and muscle mass, muscle and bone length, number of myofibrils and quantity of collagen, determined by histomorphometry muscle by color contrast. The morphological variations between all the experimental groups were compared. RESULTS: The IMMOB of the femoral biceps in shortened position produced important muscular atrophy with compensatory hyperplasia, and increase (p <0.05) in collagen deposition in the perimysium and intramuscular of rats. The free remobilization and the passive stretching reduced significantly (p <0.05) these morphological changes observed in group IMMOB. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, it was concluded that both passive stretch and free remobilization promote restoration of the morphological changes induced by prolonged immobilization in the left femoral biceps of rats; however only passive stretching was able to reduce the correlation between collagen/muscle.

INTRODUCTION: The unsystematic use of anabolic steroids, synthetic analogs of testosterone, implies enhanced cardiovascular risk and cardiac hypertrophy. Thus, increased right ventricular mass corrected by the body weight (e.g.right ventricular hypertrophy -RVH) could raise the risk for development of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). OBJECTIVES: to examine the effects of long-term chronic treatment with nandrolone decanoate on the RVH and its relationship with PAH in rats. METHODS: 16 three-month Wistar male rats were treated with nandrolone decanoate (6.0 mg/kg-1 body weight; DECA, n=8) or control vehicle (CONT, n=8). The drug and vehicle were administered by a single injection in the femoral muscle once a week for 4 weeks. After the treatment, rats were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (4.0mL/kg-1, ip), and catheterized in the femoral artery. Twenty-four hours later, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart ratio were measured. The heart, kidneys and liver were removed, weighed and the rates of hypertrophy (RH) were measured, which were calculated by the ratio of the weight of the organs by the body weight (mg.g-1). RESULTS: DECA treatment increased body weight (338 ± 6g; p <0.01) vs. CONT (315 ± 5g). This treatment had no effect on the MAP (CONT, 110±4mmHg, DECA, 113 ± 4mmHg). However, the bradycardia of animals treated with DECA (321 ± 13bpm, p<0.01) was significantly lower than that of CONT (368 ±11bpm). RH increased (p <0.01) the cardiac ventricles and the kidneys, but not in the liver. The correlation between the RVH and MAP in DECA showed positive and higher Pearson's coefficient (r² = 0.4013) vs CONT (r² = 0.0003). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that chronic nandrolone decanoate treatment induced bradycardia and RVH, which suggests increased risk for PAH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound lipoclasia (USL) on white adipose tissue (WAT) has been largely used in the treatment of cellulite. Nevertheless, the acute consequences of this therapy on metabolism and biochemical profile are significant and should be taken into account. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the acute metabolic effects of USL in WAT of healthy rats using analyses of body composition, biochemical profile, and inflammatory markers. METHODS: Female Wistar rats weighing approximately 250 g were divided into two groups (n=10 each): control and treated. The treated group was submitted to USL, a single 3-MHz ultrasound application (5.6 W/cm(2)), in gluteal-femoral WAT (3 cm(2)) for 3 minutes. Animals were subjected to glycemic control. Body composition was analyzed using bio-impedance, and lipid profile, insulinemia, C-reactive protein (CRP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured. RESULTS: USL reduced (p<.05) body fat mass. The basal metabolic rate was found to have increased (p<.05). Basal insulin and the lipoprotein profile were not different, although the glycemic curve and CRP and LDH (p<.05) levels were higher. CONCLUSIONS: Fat mobilization using USL provokes acute hyperglycemia and enhances an acute inflammatory response, producing cardiometabolic risk in female rats.

BACKGROUND: Muscular stretching is frequently used in sports practice with the aim to increase muscular flexibility and joint range of motion as well as to reduce injury risks and to improve athletic performance. AIM: To analyze the acute effect of stretching with different times in the dynamic strength performance of lower and upper extremities in young men. METHODS: The sample was composed by 14 healthy male volunteers aged 23 ± 2 years, weight of 84 ± 10 Kg , height of 178 ± 7 cm, BMI of 26 ± 2 Kg/m2 and body fat of 11 ± 3 percent. They were evaluated in a 10-maximum repetition test (10-RM) in three situations: no stretching (NS); after an 8-minute session of static stretching followed by specific warm-up (SS-8); and after 16-minute and specific warm-up before 10 RM test (SS-16). Tests were performed in bench press and 45º leg press exercises, and stretching was selected as to reach the musculature required in these exercises. RESULTS: There was significant reduction (p<0.001) of dynamic muscular strength of upper extremities in comparison to NS with SS-16 (9.2 percent) and between SS-8 (4.2 percent) and SS-16 (14.3 percent) to lower extremities. This difference was found in all tested conditions. CONCLUSION: Static stretching sessions before activities involving dynamic strength are able to negatively change performance in longer stretching periods.
